Young archaeologists at the British Museum

Year 5 explores mythology and art through ancient Greek pottery.

The year 5 children of Roger Ascham Primary School embarked on an exciting adventure to the British Museum, stepping back in time to Ancient Greece! The trip was an incredible opportunity for them to explore the fascinating world of Greek mythology, art and history.

A highlight of our visit was a special workshop focused on deciphering the stories hidden within ancient Greek pottery. Our children transformed into young archaeologists, learning how to use visual clues to identify powerful gods, graceful goddesses, and valiant heroes depicted on these ancient artifacts. They discovered how symbols, poses, and specific attributes could reveal the identity of figures like Zeus with his lightning bolt, Athena with her owl, or Heracles with his club.

The children thoroughly enjoyed examining the intricate details on the pottery, piecing together narratives, and understanding the rich cultural significance of these pieces. It was a truly engaging experience that brought their classroom learning to life and sparked a deeper appreciation for the ancient world.
