Stirring up success at Roger Ascham Primary School

How our pupils are mastering the art of the kitchen in cookery club
The corridors of Roger Ascham Primary School have been filled with the mouth-watering scent of fresh herbs and baking dough this term. Our after-school cookery club has become a firm favourite, providing children with the chance to roll up their sleeves and dive into the world of culinary arts.
Beyond just following recipes, the club focusses on giving pupils a hands-on understanding of where their food comes from and how to prepare nutritious meals from scratch.
More than just a recipe
While the end goal is always a delicious treat to take home, the sessions are designed to build vital life skills. Our pupils have been busy developing:
-
Mathematical precision: Measuring out ingredients in grams and millilitres helps children apply their classroom learning to real-life scenarios.
-
Fine motor skills: Chopping, peeling, and whisking require focus and physical coordination.
-
Collaboration: Working in small teams allows pupils to communicate effectively and share responsibilities to ensure their dishes are a success.
Seasonal flavours and healthy choices
This month, the children have been focusing on seasonal British vegetables. From savoury muffins packed with spinach to a vibrant autumn vegetable soup, the pupils are discovering that healthy eating can be both exciting and incredibly tasty.
The enthusiasm shown by the children is truly infectious. Many have already started recreating their masterpieces at home for their families, proving that the skills learnt at Roger Ascham Primary School extend far beyond the school gates.
