Sadler's Wells Dance Project

2021 : Our Lockdown Journey – A film by Roger Ascham Primary School, New Adventures & Sadler’s Wells

On 23 March 2020 the PM, Boris Johnson, announced the first lockdown in the UK. Since then, children experienced the ups and downs of lockdown including the lengthy closure of schools. Realising the historical and educational significance of this moment in children’s lives, Roger Ascham Primary School collaborated with us and Sadler’s Wells Theatre to create a dance video response project. New Adventures Dance Artists Gavin Eden and Shelby Williams worked for 6 weeks with students from across all year groups to create a unique dance film.

2023 : THE BENEFITS OF DANCE AND MOVEMENT

A collaboration between: Roger Ascham Primary School, Studio Wayne Mc Gregor, The University of Exeter and Sadler's Wells Theatre.

Over the course of 6 weeks, children were introduced to the creative process of dance production. Although the children did not create a finished piece of work, they explored the skills involved in creating and linking movements.

Using the 'Habits of Mind' as an evaluative tool and based on regular observations of the children's work, this project proved to be beneficial for the children involved.

When evaluated with reference to the 16 Habits of Mind (Costa & Kallick, 2008), the dance and movement project was observed to have improved children's learning dispositions in the following areas:

  • Persisting
  • Managing impulsivity
  • Listening with understanding and empathy
  • Creating, imagining, innovating
  • Thinking flexibly
  • Taking responsible risks
  • Thinking interdependently
