EYFS at Roger Ascham

What happens early matters for a lifetime...

What to expect in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

At Roger Ascham, we believe that a child’s early years are incredibly important and this underpins everything we do socially, emotionally and academically. We want children to be full of awe and wonder and delighted by what they see and encounter. Our environment offers opportunities for the children to explore, question, experiment, take risks, make a mess, build, sing, dig, ride, read… play needs no agenda. It is initiated by the children. Their learning will be taken forward as the adults model language and skills, ask questions to engage them and equip them as they move through life.

‘Play... is not trivial, it is highly serious and of deep significance’  - Froebel

Learning in the EYFS

A baby is born to learn!

When you interact with your baby, their brain forms more than a million new brain connections every single second. These early moments shape your child’s brain in ways that help their learning, health and behaviour both now and in the future.

We know that children develop and learn at different rates and in different ways. Their development is not neat and orderly! We have therefore adopted the Department for Education’s guidance document Development Matters. It sets out children’s learning in broad ages and shows how different experiences in a child’s early years will help them to learn.

Children learn when they feel safe and secure. Pupils at Roger Ascham have written the school rules to ensure this can happen. They apply to everyone in our school:

LISTEN to the person who is talking

THINK about our learning and how we are behaving

CARE about ourselves, each other and our school

TRY YOUR BEST every day to be the best you can be.

We hope that you will talk to your child about these rules as they join our school.
