A dazzling day at the ballet

Year 5 and 6 children experience the magic of Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes at Sadler’s Wells.

Last week, pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 at Roger Ascham Primary School had the wonderful opportunity to visit the iconic Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. The pupils were treated to a performance of Matthew Bourne’s double Olivier Award-winning production, The Red Shoes.

Based on the classic film and the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, the production by the New Adventures company captivated our young audience from the moment the curtain rose. The children were mesmerised by the breathtaking choreography, the sumptuous period costumes, and the rotating set that transported them from a dusty rehearsal room to the glamour of Monte Carlo.

It was a fantastic cultural experience for all involved, introducing the Upper Key Stage 2 pupils to the power of storytelling through dance without a single word being spoken. The stirring live score, featuring the music of Bernard Herrmann, added to the magic of the afternoon.

We are incredibly proud of how our Year 5 and Year 6 cohorts represented the school, displaying exemplary behaviour and a keen interest in the arts throughout the trip. We hope this visit has inspired some of our own budding dancers and creatives!
