Breathing easier at Roger Ascham Primary School

Our pupils learned about air quality through the Mayor of London's School Filters Programme

At Roger Ascham Primary School, we were proud to participate in the Mayor of London’s pioneering School Filters Programme. This initiative was designed to provide cleaner air for young Londoners by installing High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters in classrooms, helping to reduce harmful pollutants and create a healthier learning environment for all our children.

An inspiring whole-school assembly

To launch the project, our pupils took part in a special assembly that explored the importance of air quality. The children learned about how tiny, invisible particles can affect our health and what steps we can take as a community to protect our lungs. It was wonderful to see the pupils so engaged, asking thoughtful questions about the new "smart" machines in their classrooms and how they work to trap dust and pollution.

Hands-on learning in Year 3

Our Year 3 pupils had the exciting opportunity to dive deeper into the science of clean air through a series of dedicated workshops. During these sessions, the children became "air quality champions," using monitors to understand the environment around them. They investigated the sources of pollution and discussed practical ways to encourage active travel, such as walking, cycling, or scooting to school.

A commitment to a healthier future

Being part of this programme is a significant step in our ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of every child at Roger Ascham Primary School. By combining advanced technology with interactive education, we are ensuring that our pupils not only breathe cleaner air but also feel empowered to advocate for a greener, healthier London. We would like to thank the Greater London Authority and the delivery partners for bringing these vital resources to our school.
