Art
At Roger Ascham our art and design curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop creativity. Children are engaged, inspired and challenged to create work that explores a range of stimuli and employs a wide variety of techniques. In order to do this, children need to be given the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create as well as a safe learning environment where mistakes can be made and used as opportunities to improve, develop and make artistic decisions.
Children are taught to examine, evaluate and analyse artwork critically and, as they develop a deeper understanding of art and design, recognise how it has shaped our history and contributed to culture, creativity and represented the thinking and ideas of people at certain times using artistic language. They learn about great artists, craft makers and designers as well as gaining an appreciation and knowledge of historical and cultural developments of art forms. They become increasingly proficient at drawing, painting and sculpting.
Children are given specific practice and exposure to techniques, styles and processes used today and by artists from the past. They record their experiences and are able to refer back to them when they need to. They are also given the space and opportunity to produce creative work that gives them the scope to explore their own ideas, influenced by what they have learned. Reflection is encouraged: the effectiveness of pieces of work is considered and time made for children to respond to feedback.
